On Men’s Fashion

So, after reading a thread on Twitter about how men’s fashion got to the boring, un-inventive place that it currently is, with plenty of bemoaning of the lack of color and expression in most men’s closets, I decided to post a bit about my own fashion sense, as it is generally lacking in neither color nor expression, without being too outlandish, or even breaking most non-conservative office dress codes. It ended up being pretty wildly popular, so, as with my other recent post sourced from one of my twitter threads, I have decided to turn it into a blog post.

Here are a few ways to play with your personal fashion without having to go too wild, or spend a bunch of money on designer stuff:

1. Play with a single bright color:

2. Play with lots of colors at once:

3. Play with patterns in your shirts, in addition to colors:

4. Play with layers:

5. Feel free to be bold, especially with one item at a time:

6. Just because you’re in shorts doesn’t mean you have to be boring:

7. Embrace subtle but unusual patterns:

8. Even when you have to tone it down, you can still be interesting:

9. Just dig in your closet and see what combines in interesting ways:

10. Most importantly, figure out what you want to project, think about what that would look like and just GO FOR IT.

I feel that I should note that all my clothes come from fairly “traditional” sources. Virtually my entire wardrobe comes from a combination of Old Navy, Target, American Eagle, JCrew, H&M, and Dockers, with occasional appearances by Ralph Lauren, Denim & Supply, and Original Penguin. I do buy a lot of my stuff online, as there’s generally a somewhat wider range available there than in stores, and I frequent sites like Poshmark and even eBay to find more unusual things like a floral blazer or paisley pants. Even without searching online though, it’s often just a matter of not ignoring the more bold choices on the rack in the store. As more men buy more expressive clothes, more designers will start designing them, and more stores will start stocking them. So be bold.
